I wish I was a yuppie from 1986. Not the lame wannabee yuppies that exist today. I want to sleep away most of the day and meet my depressed pill popping mom at the country club for lunch. After that, I want to hop in my Wayfarer wearing boyfriend’s BMW convertible and stay up all night partying with my friends named Trevor, Trent, Margot and Blair. I want to wear a shoulder padded blazer, a casual form fitting skirt over leggings and a bunch of chunky necklaces.
I think my obsession with Los Angeles fashion in the 1980’s started with Troop Beverly Hills and Shelly Long. Later on in life, I loved the world Bret Easton Ellis created in his books – Less than Zero, The Informers etc. Don’t be silly, of course I don’t bomb around Charlestown dressed like some drugged out country club princess from twenty years ago. But, sometimes when I’m shopping I’m pretty sure I gravitate towards any piece that might incorporate some of that character in my look.
We all do this. A friend of mine hasn’t met a nautical striped shirt that she didn’t like. Why the sea stripes? She’s never bombed around Brittany but there’s something about France that inspires her personal style. She seems to incorporate a whimsical Parisian flair into her wardrobe. She’s admitted that when shopping sometimes she thinks she's some Amelie esque character who enjoys the simple pleasures in life - skipping stones on the river, eating crème brulee and riding her bike. And, all while wearing a ladylike pencil skirt and cardigan of course.
